Bristol – Tabloid News Hub of the UK!

17Nov10

I don’t normally say this, but this week’s Venue has a thing in it by me which some will find interesting, so buy it if you live round these parts.

Through a series of historic accidents, and the changes to the UK media industry in recent years, Bristol could well soon be the new Fleet Street. No, really. Half, sometimes more, of the human interest and real life stories you read in the Red-Top papers and the women’s magazines have been produced by journalists working for agencies based in Bristol.

A lot of this goes back to South West News but even though I’m a journalist and supposed to know this stuff, I never realised how big a player they’ve become.

The thing most people will find surprising, though, is that the days of people in the news being besieged by reporters and monstered by photographers are on the way out. Nowadays you’re just as likely to sign an exclusive deal with an agency in the hope that you and them both can make a few quid from the papers and the magazines.

That’s this week’s Venue, in all good local newsagents now, for the background to the stories with headlines like:

PEA SHOOTING CHAMPION THREATENED WITH FINE OVER PHALLIC GARDEN HEDGE

BOY RACERS STEAL LAUGHING GAS FROM HOSPITALS TO POWER SPORTS CARS

26-YEAR-OLD JAILED AFTER SHE WAS CAUGHT STEALING FROM HER 83-YEAR-OLD FIANCEE

SCALES OF BUST-ICE: CASHIER’S BREASTS ADD £5 TO SHOPPER’S FRUIT AND VEG BILL
